BiographyJenny was born in 1961, and grew up in Wellington, New Zealand. She married Fuataga Kasimani Lautusi and went to live in Western Samoa for three years, where she taught at Samoa High School and had two lovely kids, Kenese (boy) and Kalia (girl). At the age of 26 she came back to New Zealand, with her two children and enrolled at the local design school, where she studied for four years. Her first job was at the Canterbury Museum where she wove flax kete, rain capes, piu piu. Jenny began to illustrate freelance at that time and gradually took on more and more work until she was full-time freelance illustrating, which she has done for the last 15 years. She loves working from home, seeing her friends, doing the garden, - she likes the freedom and peace and quiet. Jenny illustrates mainly educational books, there are hundreds of them out there, but she is doing more and more trade books lately and has been nominated twice for the Russel Clark Illustration Awards, (LIANZA) for "The Pippi and the Mussels" (Reed) and "Down in The Forest" (Scholastic). Jenny also tutors occasionally at Continuing Education at Canterbury University and with the design students at Christchurch Polytechnic. She also talks frequently in primary schools and takes workshops on illustrating which she finds great fun and very inspiring. Jenny also specializes in illustrating for Pacific Island and Maori children, working in a realistic style, sometimes under her married name of Jennifer Lautusi. |
