Biography

Denise is a full time illustrator living in Wellington, New Zealand with her partner James and their cat, Pierre.
In 1987 she began studying graphic design at Wellington Polytechnic Design School. After graduating with a diploma Denise started work in educational publishing, illustrating textbooks with black and white line drawings.

Denise began working freelance five years ago after years of working on computers as a graphic artist in the newspaper industry and realising she no longer produced any illustration and there wasn’t even a pencil on her desk. During this time Denise had attended watercolour and life drawing classes. These were so beneficial that she made a commitment to regular life drawing classes for herself personally and for her illustration. She then wanted to be producing illustrations that involved painting and drawing and wanted this to be the core of her work and life. She left the newspaper in 2001.

It has been a very happy five years for Denise and she has been able to work with some great people on some lovely projects that used lots of watercolour, paper and pencils. She now also participates in group exhibitions and has many illustration and personal art projects in development.
