Samer has a Diploma in Graphic Art (printmaking) from the Institute of Fine Arts, Baghdad, Iraq,(1985) and a Bachelors degree in painting from Academy of Fine Arts, Baghdad, Iraq.(1989)

He has worked as an illustrator for Childrens Cultural House in Iraq and then illustrator and book designer for Atalla Design in Jordan. From 1999-2003 he was printmaking Studio Supervisor for Shoman Foundation in Jordan.

Samer has illustrated over 70 children's books both internationally and here in New Zealand, and has been exhibiting his work internationally in galleries regularly since 1984.

His work was selected for exhibition in the Bologna Children's Book Fair in Italy in 2002. He was also a finalist in the James Wallace Art Award, NZ in 2005.

Samer and his wife Lamia Aziz immigrated to New Zealand from Iraq in 2003.
