Sandra Morris workshops: Tongariro 2010 This summer, the Tongariro workshop had 12 participants - all women. Everyone arrived Friday afternoon and stayed at the Skotel Lodge at Whakapapa village which is very handy to the start of the two tracks we concentrated on. Saturday started with an introduction and briefing of programme and a look at some nature journals and nature writers. The day stayed fine and we spent most of it visually recording the alpine flowers and orchids growing along the Taranaki falls track. Lunch was enjoyed alongside the clear bubbling river before it tumbles into the pool 20 meters below. Next time we will bring our togs. Sunday was a wet day but everyone was focussed and we set off and made event maps of the Silica rapids walk, documenting our track in our journals and marking on it the plants and wildlife that we noticed. The weather got steadily worse but most people persevered and ended up with a good record of the track. Although the weather had deteriorated we had been lucky to see the area in both its guises- bright and clear and then moody and brooding. We were reminded of how the weather can change there in a matter of minutes. Below are some of the photos from the workshop |
